Project Description

Global Professionals and their family members have limited or no culturally informed “in country” transition support for mental health. Research says that the main reason why Global Professionals prematurely leave their assignment is due to psychological problems with them, their spouse and/ or child(ren). As organizations continue to globalize, there is an increasing challenge to use expatriates on international assignments to complete strategically, critical tasks (Gregersen & Black 1996, Brewster 1998, Downes & Thomas 1999). Research shows that if an Global Professional leaves within the first year of their overseas assignment, it can cost the company millions.

I would like to share the top 4 struggles we see when “Global Citizens” move countries and give practical ways on how to cope. A Global Citizen includes: expats, trailing spouses, immigrants, multi-cultural families.

We will facilitate groups on marriage, parenting and some of the other struggles. Our goal is to help people thrive globally.  Our new product, eTranstion, helps business retain key talent abroad by leveraging technology to help the employee and their families thrive abroad.

Why does this idea matter to you?

While abroad we may underestimate the toll it could have on our relationships, including our significant other, children and even the family we left behind. Moving to a new country is exciting. We look forward to new experiences and focus on the logistics of the move, but are often ill-prepared for the feelings and emotions that follow. After the honeymoon stage, when everything is new and interesting, cultural bereavement can come in like a flood. We miss our families, friends, food and all those things we are familiar with.

This is often inevitable, but with the right tools, it is manageable. Global Counseling Solutions provides you with internationally known tools and evidence-based practices you can use in your everyday life.

How will you idea make Oslo a better place?

I believe developing a sense of community in groups that are positive and provide practical coping skills, can help people thrive in Oslo. It will increase their self esteem, and build confidence. Most of all, they will know they are not alone.

How will you use the micro-grant funding to realize your concept?

It will offset the cost of the groups. It would be nice to offer free groups. If nothing else, it will provide the meeting space and/or food.
