Project Description

Girls Can Do IT is a project to gather women and create community within IT field. The idea is to create free meetings every month, so that more and more can become interested in programming, project management and other IT sub fields. There is huge need for female in IT, cause it is still dominated by men. We believe that women feel best in between women, but we do not discriminate men. They are allowed to come, but the main focus are women. We have run already few meetings but we still need money to prepare food and organize better and better events.

Why does this idea matter to you?

Myself I was in the same situation as lots of other women can be right now. I did not have opportunity to join Norwegian meetings, could not find job but I still needed to gain knowledge, experience and grow my network. Myself I am the only woman in my company (working as frontend developer), one of the few girls on my programme on university (NTNU). I believe women can and should join IT. If there is gender harmony, the work goes much better.

How will you idea make Oslo a better place?

Idea is to encourage women to come and learn, while right now on the market lots of companies are in need to make the gender average similar. They want women in IT, so we are giving companies the opportunity.

How will you use the micro-grant funding to realize your concept?

The funding is going to help us in organizing events- we need to create brand(logo, posters, stickers) to make ourselves more visible. It can give us also opportunity to pay for food during the meeting. Maintaining a community is a tough work.
